    Memory

    Question:
I have been on and off meth (mostly on) for the last several years, and my memory is so bad that I sometimes forget where I am or even WHO I am. Is it common for crystal addicts to have memory problems? Do these problems only affect memories of times during use or do they continue after quitting? I'm trying very hard to stay clean, and I'm hoping my memory will improve as I get more clean time. Will it?

    Answer:
Memory problems are not only common in meth addicts but a problem with memory is one of the effects caused from using the drug. People who use marijuana do to, using pot can even be worse when it comes to memory, especially for short term memory.

A lot has to do with how long and how chronic your meth use was and were there other drugs abused. The chemicals in meth changes the way your brain functions and kills brain cells. Some people never fully recover in terms of loss of memory. Some heavy meth users suffer from brain damage for the rest of their life and their memory continues to get worse.

The body takes time to heal and the effects meth and other drug use has on your brain needs time to heal. There's no way to know for sure how well your memory will improve, only time will tell. You definitely need to stop using meth now. Some people think if they slow down the damage will slow down and this isn't true. Seek help for your addiction to meth, if there are any other drugs being used get help for that too. This isn't easy I know but you want to preserve and take care of the memory you do have right now because it will only get worse if you don't completely stop.
