Grant Issued to Help Identify Meth Mouth In Beginning Stages

Grant Issued to Help Identify Meth Mouth In Beginning Stages

The use of methamphetamines continues to rise and people of all ages use these drugs, there is over a million chronic users. The sad thing is that abusing meth in the long term leads to seriously dangerous consequences, both mental and physical. The consequence of using methamphetamines affects a person psychologically and causes serious medical problems. Not only is their health at risk but their behavior changes causing violent tendencies and mood disorders.

Abusing meth also affects a person's oral health. Not enough is known about 'meth mouth' which is a serious effect of methamphetamine use. There is very little understanding associated with meth use and the affects it causes associated with oral health. This prevents professionals in the dental field from identifying this oral disease when it first begins to take effect.

If dental professionals understood more about meth and oral health they would also be able to help the user get the treatment they so desperately need for their meth use.

Fortunately a grant of $1.86 million dollars was given to UCLA's School of Dentistry from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute. This grant will give them the opportunity to study the oral and dental consequences associated with methamphetamine use.

Dental disease is one of the distinctive signs in an individual that uses methamphetamines, this happens in the early stages of meth use. In the beginning stages of meth use the individual appears healthy but their dental oral signs of use begin to appear.

When the Dental Profession is able to identify the early signs of meth use which is associated with 'meth mouth', they will be in a position to help the user get the help they need for their drug use.
