Should I Stop Using Meth Cold Turkey and Without Professional Assistance?

    Question:
I'm 51, and have been addicted to meth for the past 26yrs. I've been doing drugs for the past 35yrs. I really want to quit, is it possible for me to quit on my own? My boyfriend thinks I can.

    Answer:
Meth addiction is extremely serious and in order to quit using a drug that's this powerful, a person needs professional treatment, help, guidance and support to stop using the drug safely and successfully if they're a chronic user. 26 years of using meth is a very long time and 35 years of drug use is extremely hard to just stop on your own but I admire your wanting to quit. I understand that you would prefer to quit on your own but I don't recommend it for your physical and emotional health because this can be much too dangerous.

Attempting to cold turkey meth after extended use is very dangerous so please seek professional detoxification that's overseen by qualified medical professionals at a treatment center or hospital that will help you safely detox. Many complications can take place during this time depending on age, health, length of substance use, how heavily a person used, and if there were more than one substance abused during drug use.

Detoxification overseen by a professional can be done safely for your emotional and physical well-being not only keeping you safe during this time but comfortable as well. Please don't stop at detox though, the most successful treatment for a person that's used drugs for any length of time provides their patients with evaluations, behavior therapies, individualized treatment programs, positive support, and the skills needed to prevent relapse and maintain their drug free sobriety.

If you need any advice or need help regarding what form of treatment is best to fit your own unique needs call 1-800-559-9503 any time of the day or week because you don't have to go through this alone and we can help. Stay positive and don't go through this by yourself, Good Luck!
