My Daughter Is A Meth Addict

My Daughter Is A Meth Addict

My daughter is a meth addict, currently with over a month clean and in rehab. It has been a long hard road, and know it will be lifetime work for her. As a mother I always want to fix everything and make it better. It is so hard to let go, which is what we must do. I have to continually remind myself that "I didn't Cause it, I can't Control it and I can't cure it." My daughter started having problems when she was 13. She had panic attacks, depression, started drinking and smoking pot.

She was arrested and spent time in juvenile hall. She attempted suicide a few times. She went to a group home for over a year. It was supposed to be a rehab, but what a joke! It did help some, but mostly they kept her very medicated. How are you supposed to learn to deal with your feelings if you are not allowed to feel? Things went well for a while and then she started using meth. Once again our world came crashing down. We had to kick her out, then she moved in, then she left, then back, then out....etc. I told her she could stay if she was clean, otherwise she had to leave. She also had to be respectful of others in the house. So now she is in rehab. The story will never be over as she will always have to fight this awful drug. I have a website with more info if you are interested: Dorothy - Montague, California

I can't express to you how sad it was the day I discovered my son was a meth addict. You hope you can keep your kids from harm and teach them how to be careful but it doesn't work that way. My daughter started college and was doing very well the first year. Then I learned she was missing classes, a lot of them. Turns out she was going to get high instead of going to class. She found meth at a party and never turned back. When she flunked out of school we brought her home and we told her the only way she could stay with us was to stay clean. She did well, or we thought, for a few weeks and then we noticed she wasn't coming home and when she was home she was sleeping all the time. We told her she had to leave and she did. This went back and forth for months until finally we told her she needed to go to a rehab center if she wanted to come back to our house.

She agreed and she found help with the meth addiction. She is still participating in an inpatient program and working hard to learn the tools that will help her to learn to cope with her feelings and how life can trigger her addiction. We are hoping that she will be able to come home soon and start a new life. She will always be challenged by the addiction to meth.

Our straight A student was hiding a big secret. He was a star athlete with great grades and lots of friends. We never thought he would become a meth addict. It happened by accident according to him. He was at a party and tried meth once and from there on he wanted more and more. It took over his life and he suddenly started missing classes and staying up all night. He was missing practices and failing tests that he never had a problem with before. When we caught him sneaking out of the house on a weeknight it was obvious there was a problem. It wasn't until he was arrested that we realized how bad it really was. After a lot of talking and being given no alternative by a judge, he went into rehab.

He has been in rehab for months and is doing well with a lot of work. Not even he realized how much of his life was slipping away from him and being replaced with his desire for meth. Through group counseling and individual counseling sessions he is learning how to spot the triggers he is going to face in the world and what to do when he needs help. He has a great deal of work ahead of him and a lot to face when he comes home, but hopefully with what they are teaching him he will be able to look to a future free from meth and filled with success.

When I found out that my sister was addicted to meth it shocked me. She always had it all together. She was the bright one in school and had all the friends. She had such high hopes and dreams for her future. She always knew right where she was going and had it all planned out. She headed for college knowing what she was going to face and excited about it. When she called me crying one day that she had lost everything and was so embarrassed, I didn't know what she was talking about. A friend had given her meth to help her stay awake so she could study for exams. She couldn't get away from it after that and had no control over it. She wanted it all the time to the point she was missing classes and failing tests. It finally came to head when she lost her scholarship.

She didn't know where to turn or what to do. When she called me I went to her as fast as possible not knowing what to expect. She went straight to rehab shocked by the things she had done for meth. She has a long road ahead still and she will not likely be able to go back on that same path to her dream as she was on before. She will need to find the strength to make a new path and hopefully rehab is going to help her learn the tools to make that happen for her.
