Question:
My brother is an addict and he has been for more years than I care to count. It tears the family apart to watch him throw his entire life away. Is there a way I can get my brother into treatment? He refuses to seek it himself he doesn't think there is a problem!
Answer:
A professional intervention is one way of trying to get your brother the help he needs but it's ultimately up to him in the long run. An experienced Interventionist will work with the family gathering information and planning an intervention to help the addict see their need for help and treatment. There's no 100% guarantee that the individual will agree to go for help but Interventions done with a professional are very successful. Their goal is to let the addict see for themselves their need for treatment, find them the right help for them individually, and help the families or friends at the same time.
Treatment doesn't have to be voluntary in order to be successful. Many people seek treatment for their drug addictions or drug use because they were ordered to by the courts or family and loved ones urged them to. A lot of people benefit from treatment once they're there. Continue to talk to your brother about the positive points associated with treatment and recovery. You won't get anywhere if conversations are accusing, they become defensive and you get more upset.
It's really helpful for family members and friends to read helpful recovery and addiction books so you get a better understanding of what addiction really is. Nar-Anon Family Groups is for people that are affected by someone else's addiction. This program is adapted from Narcotics Anonymous and is a 12 Step program designed to help relatives and friends of the addict because, family and friends need help and recovery just as much as the addict does. Addiction doesn't just affect the addict, it affects those who love and care about them too.
