Meth Exposure Impacts More Than The Brain

Meth Exposure Impacts More Than The Brain

Methamphetamines like crystal meth are a drug of choice for many people because of the extreme rush of energy and euphoria they experience when using the drug. Meth is very addictive, destroys brain cells, and causes severe changes in a person's appearance. In the past most of the studies that have been done on the effects methamphetamine use has on an individual, have been centered on changes in the brain. A new study was done recently to examine the exposure to meth and the effects that take place throughout the body.

Thanks to University of Illinois Scientists we now know a little more about the effects meth has on our bodies. Studies have been done examining changes that take place in the brain when an individual is exposed to meth but what about the whole body? We know that methamphetamine abuse drastically changes a person's behavior including their appearance but how it impacts and influences the whole body on a molecular level was unknown.

A study which was led by Professor Barry Pittendrigh from the University of Illinois was done in order to track changes that take place when exposed to meth. Fruit flies were chosen because of their size and they were able to take a good look at the whole organism to see what changes were taking place when they were exposed to meth.

Research showed that there were quite a few molecular pathways that were changed from the exposure to methamphetamine. These changes were related to energy generation, sugar metabolism, sperm cell formation, hormones, cell structure, skeletal muscle and cardiac muscles. In-depth Study
